Personal Loans · India
Ask ten Indian borrowers where to get a personal loan and most will say either SBI or HDFC Bank. Both are excellent lenders, but they are built for different kinds of customers, and choosing the wrong one can cost you real money or an unnecessary rejection.
Where SBI wins
SBI’s Xpress Credit loan typically starts around 11.30% per annum, and its biggest advantage is accessibility: the minimum income requirement sits near Rs 15,000 a month, roughly half of what most private banks demand. Government employees, PSU staff and pensioners with SBI salary accounts get the smoothest ride, often with minimal paperwork. If your salary account is already with SBI, the pricing is hard to beat.
Where HDFC Bank wins
HDFC Bank starts slightly lower on paper, around 10.85%, but the range stretches to 21% depending on your profile. Its real strength is speed: existing customers with good scores routinely see approval and disbursal within hours through the app. Loan amounts also stretch higher, up to Rs 40 lakh for strong profiles, against SBI’s Rs 35 lakh cap.
- Choose SBI if: your income is modest, you work in government or a PSU, or you already bank with SBI.
- Choose HDFC if: you earn Rs 25,000+ monthly in a private company, have a 750+ score, and value fast digital processing.
The fine print both share
Both charge processing fees (SBI is often gentler here), both penalise missed EMIs heavily, and both price your loan on your CIBIL score above everything else. Whichever you pick, a 750+ score is worth more than any bank-versus-bank difference.
Do not stop at two banks
ICICI, Axis, Kotak and NBFCs like Bajaj Finserv sometimes undercut both on specific profiles, and NBFCs are noticeably more flexible on credit history. Rates change monthly, so compare current numbers before applying rather than relying on last year’s headline rate.
